Join the Pitt Muslim Alumni Network and the African-American Alumni Council for an evening of poetry, reflections, an exhibit from America's Islamic Heritage Museum, and a presentation from the museum's director, Amir Muhammad. Come learn about America’s rich extensive Islamic history dating back to the 16th century, while exploring some of the lives and events of the 17th, 18th and 19th century of Muslims heritage and their contributions and narratives in America. Islam predates the Atlantic slave trade to a time and place when Muslim ancestors lived on a continent that was rich in culture, natural resources, and beliefs. Some of our ancestors even practiced a religion called Islam, an Abrahamic faith based on the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him), which is referenced throughout Black history to the present. Therefore, to understand the impact Islam has had on the African Diaspora, we will journey into the past to learn about the first African Muslim, Bilal; second, we will acknowledge Islam’s influences on our African heritage and our American struggles; and finally, we will discuss the future and the impression Islam will continue to have within our communities.
