The Middle East Institute is hosting a an all-day conference titled “Securing Egypt’s Future.” The event brings together a range of Egyptian and American voices to examine recent political, social, and economic developments with the aim of providing recommendations and solutions for securing a more stable, prosperous, inclusive, and democratic Egypt.

Geographies of Power: Justice, Revolution, and the Cultural Imagination

Using historical analysis and cross-cultural awareness, this conference will emphasize shifting geographies of power in the period between the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and the 2011 Arab Spring. The project is premised on the idea that “the frontiers of cultural understanding” are undergoing a transformation that can only be appreciated through a cross-cultural perspective and a multi-disciplinary methodology that is alert to the historical precedents behind current geopolitical and cultural conflicts.

As part of the "Idea of France" international and interdisciplinary conference being held November 10-12 on Pitt's campus, two global studies colloquia will be held. The first will be a discussion with John Bowen (Anthropology, Wash U) of his 2010 book Can Islam be French?, to be held Friday November 11, 8:30-10:00 a.m. at the Holiday Inn in Oakland (Schenley Room III/IV), 100 Lytton Street. The suggested reading is chaps. 1-3, and 9. A second colloquium will be held on Susan Suleiman and Christie McDonald’s edited volume French Global (2010) on Saturday November 12, 9:00-10:30 a.m.
