Iraqi oud player Rahim AlHaj will be performing in Pittsburgh as part of the Beyond Microtonal Music Festival from January 11-13th. AlHaj will perform a movement of his own piece, Letters from Iraq alongside the Beyond Festival Chamber Orchestra at the Carnegie Music Hall of Oakland at 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 11th. This concert will also include a variety or works by other modern composers, and is FREE to Pitt students. AlHaj will give a second performance, featuring traditional and contemporary Iraqi music alongside percussionist Issa Malluf, at the Andy Warhol Museum at 8 p.m.

The 2013 Bosnian census figures report by the central government contain an over count of approximately 150,000, a number greater than the population of the third-largest city in the country, and probably due mainly to illegal registration on non-residents in strategically important parts of the country. While EUROSTAT has devised procedures to ensure a more accurate enumeration, the leaders of the three main ethno-national political communities had opposing interests in country nonresident, illegally, as residents.

The theme for the ninth annual International Islamophobia Conference is framed by a critical article written by Professor S. Sayyid and Abdoolkarim Vakil (https://irdproject.com/reports-of-islamophobia-1997-2017/) on the occasion of Runnymede Trust publishing, “Islamophobia: Still a Challenge for us all”. We included the full article below to contextualize the ninth annual conference call for papers, which seeks to examine five areas framed by the authors and abstracts should engage one or more of these strands.

In his recent book, Shifting Sands, Dr. Migdal discusses how key transformations led to a series of missteps and misconceptions in the 20th century US policy towards the Middle East. He sees an opportunity for the US to deploy a new, more workable strategy.
